Dr Ric van Tol studied Biology at the University of Groningen, completing doctoral research on Islet Transplantation for Type 1 Diabetes, including an internship at the University of Minnesota, USA. He earned his PhD at Leiden University Medical Center, focusing on Gastro-Intestinal Immunology and Neurology, followed by postdoctoral work, facilitated by a 4 year research grant, at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA.
Dr van Tol spent nearly 20 years in industrial research, specializing in infant and clinical nutrition at Danone and Mead Johnson Nutrition. He held leadership roles including Line Manager for Gut Health, Global R&D Director, and member of the Global R&D Leadership teams, overseeing preclinical research programs worldwide, and aligning innovation strategies with key stakeholders.
After a consulting role at TNO (2020–2022), he joined Amsterdam UMC's AGEM institute in 2022, supporting strategic innovation and business development. He has authored 60+ peer-reviewed articles and holds around 20 patent applications. In the SMARTHEAL project, he supports the Amsterdam UMC research team in translating (pre)clinical data into tools for predicting complications after major abdominal surgery.
